Hi there! My name is Dinah, and I’ve been proudly working as a Hedgerow Homecare care-assistant for the past four years. I had absolutley no experience when I started out, and I attended their in-house training courses to learn about a care-workers role before I went out into the field. I've loved my journey, its been amazing every step of the way.
Every day is a little bit different, but my goal is always to help my clients feel comfortable and happy at home. This job is more than just tasks—it’s about building real relationships and making a difference in someone’s day. Here’s a little peek into what a typical day looks like for me.
Mornings: Getting the Day Started Right
My day usually starts bright and early. I make my way to Hampstead where I help a lady called Denise during the day. We go through her morning routine together—making sure she's washed, dressed, and settled for breakfast. I'll let her choose what she wants to wear, but I don't have to ask what she wants for breakfast! It's a boiled egg with a toasted bagel and a black Yorkshire Tea. I'm partial to a cup of tea aswell, so we'll have one together at the dining table.
We usually have a chat over breakfast. I'll make sure to ask how she's feeling before moving on to the bigger topics like the weather! I'll gently remind Denise to take her morning meds. We'll talk about the news for a bit before I do the dishes and leave her with the tv on so she can watch her favourite gameshow channel.
Afternoons: A Bit of Chit-Chat and Helping Around the House
I'll have a little break then see if I can help out around the house. This could mean tidying up a bit, washing dishes, making the bed or somethign along those lines. I'll prepare a light lunch for Denise. Often, it’s just about being there to keep her company—sometimes, we sit and talk about family, old memories, or what’s going on in the neighborhood. These chats are my favorite part of the day because I get to hear about her life and share a laugh or two. It’s amazing what you learn about people when you take the time to listen!
Evenings: Wrapping Up the Day
As the day winds down, I help with evening routines—help Denise get into comfy clothes, maybe fix a snack for her, or if shes more hungry we might have a larger dinner. I make sure she's comfortable before bed. I'll ask if she needs help with anything else. There’s a real sense of calm at the end of the day, and it feels good to know I’m leaving her settled and comfortable.
I’ve been with Hedgerow Homecare for four years now, and I can honestly say it feels like family. The company treat me very well and allow me to work in my own way. I've made some amazing friends and worked with so many wonderful clients.
It’s not always easy work, but it’s so rewarding to know I’m making a difference in someone’s day, helping them feel safe and cared for. Thanks for letting me share a bit of what I do—it’s a job I’m proud of, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
